Key takeaways
- A Shopify meta title is the blue Google link. The product title is the on-page name. They can be close; they should not be copy-paste identical on every SKU.
- Aim for a unique title of about 50–60 characters and a unique description of about 140–155. Those are display limits, not ranking scores.
- Lead with the product type and one fact (size, material, pack). Put an unknown brand last.
- Paste the live URL into the ChatGPT SEO check. Admin preview and storefront source can disagree.
- Preview the snippet before you save. The listing you publish should be the listing Google can show.
A Shopify meta title is the blue link Google shows for a URL. A meta description is the grey sentence under it. Shoppers decide whether to click from those two lines, not from the H1 you spent an afternoon on.
Most stores never fill the Search engine listing fields. Shopify then falls back to the product title and a cut of the description. Twenty colourways inherit one weak snippet. Collections inherit “Products” and nothing else.
This guide is how to write the two fields so they match the page, fit the snippet, and stay unique. It is not a ranking guarantee. Google can still rewrite a description. You still control the title you publish and the facts in it.
Meta title vs product title vs H1
Three different strings, three jobs.
| Field | Who reads it | Where you edit it |
|---|---|---|
| Product title | Shoppers on the product page | Products → title |
| Page heading (H1) | Shoppers, and as a hint to search | Usually the product title in the theme |
Meta title (<title>) | Google, Bing, ChatGPT, browser tabs | Search engine listing, or an SEO app |
They can be close. They should not be copy-paste identical across a whole catalogue.
Example (labelled example, not a live store). Product title: Harbour Linen Overshirt — Sage. Meta title: Sage Linen Overshirt | Relaxed Fit | Harbour. The on-page title keeps the merchandising name. The meta title leads with the search phrase (linen overshirt), then a fact (relaxed fit), then the brand. That is the pattern.
If the meta title is only Harbour Linen Overshirt — Sage / Harbour Linen Overshirt — Sage / Harbour, you burned the snippet on a duplicate brand.
Character counts that actually display
Google does not rank you for hitting a magic number. It cuts titles and descriptions that overflow the pixel width of the result.
Practical limits merchants can use:
- Meta title: about 50–60 characters. Front-load the product type. Brand last unless the brand is the query.
- Meta description: about 140–155 characters. One sentence of what it is, one sentence of a fact (material, pack, use). A call to action is optional; “Shop now” wastes characters you could spend on size or fabric.
Count characters in the editor, not words. Women's and womens are different lengths. Emoji and | eat width.
If your theme or app shows a Google preview, trust that more than a raw character counter. Pixel width on mobile is tighter than desktop.
What to put in a Shopify meta title
Write it like the query a shopper would type, plus the one fact that makes this URL different.
A working formula:
[Product type] [differentiator] | [Brand]
Examples (labelled examples):
Organic Cotton Crew Socks 3-Pack | North HarbourCeramic Pour-Over Dripper, 2-Cup | Kiln & CoKids' Rain Jacket, Recycled Shell | Puddle
Rules that hold up:
- One primary phrase. If the product is a linen overshirt, the title should say linen overshirt. Do not also cram “best”, “cheap”, “2026”, and the collection name.
- The differentiator is a fact. Colour, pack size, material, fit, scent, voltage. Not “premium quality”.
- Brand last unless people search the brand.
Nikecan lead. An unknown house brand should not. - No ALL CAPS. It looks like an ad and gets rewritten more often.
- No duplicate titles.
SageandSandovershirts need different titles. If you only change the colour word, that is enough.
Collection titles are a different job. Linen Shirts for Warm Weather | Harbour tells Google the collection is a group, not a single SKU. Homepage titles should name the shop and what it sells: Harbour — Linen Clothing for Warm Climates, not Home.
What to put in a Shopify meta description
The description is a pitch, not a keyword bag. Google may ignore it and pull a sentence from the page. Write it as if it will show, because when it does, it is the whole ad.
A working formula:
What it is. One concrete fact. Who it is for or how it is used.
Example (labelled example). Product: Harbour Linen Overshirt, sage, relaxed fit, OEKO-TEX linen, ships from EU.
Weak: Buy the best linen overshirt. Premium quality. Free shipping. Shop the Harbour collection today!
Stronger: Relaxed-fit sage linen overshirt in OEKO-TEX linen. Cut for warm weather, with a chest pocket and corozo buttons. EU stock.
The second version is specific. It can be checked against the page. If the overshirt is not OEKO-TEX, you just wrote a lie into the SERP. Do not invent certifications.
Include:
- Product type in plain language
- One proof (material, volume, pack, origin)
- Fit, size system, or use if that is why people bounce
Skip:
- “Best”, “#1”, “cheap” unless you can defend it
- Coupon codes that expire (the snippet outlives the sale)
- A second brand name
- A paste of the first 155 characters of a thin description
If the on-page description is two sentences of marketing fog, fix the product description too. The CRO Audit for Shopify stores flags thin catalogue copy (under 100 characters) as a product-description miss. Search and conversion fail the same SKU for the same reason.
Shopify’s native fields vs an SEO app
You do not need an app to fill one product. Open the product (or collection, page, blog post) → Search engine listing → Edit website SEO → set Page title and Description → save.
You need an app when hundreds of products are empty, you sell in more than one Shopify Market, or you want a Google preview and bulk AI drafts you can edit.
Rankly writes AI meta titles and meta descriptions with a Google preview before you save. Free includes those fields inside 100 AI credits. Starter ($9.99/mo) adds bulk generation and Markets. Pro ($29.99/mo) can auto-fill missing SEO when a product changes. Billed in USD through Shopify. It does not buy rankings.
How to check the live snippet
Do not trust the admin preview alone. Themes, apps, and JSON-LD can emit a different title than the one you typed.
- Open the live product URL in a private window.
- View source (or the browser inspector) and read
<title>and<meta name="description">. - Confirm they match what you saved.
- Paste the same URL into the ChatGPT SEO check for Shopify stores. That check reads public HTML, JSON-LD, robots.txt and llms.txt. It is not a citation rank and it does not log into admin.
- Use Google’s Rich Results Test if you also care about Product markup. Title tags and Product schema are different jobs.
If source shows a title you did not write, another app or the theme is overriding the field. Turn off the extra SEO app or fix the theme. Two plugins writing <title> is how you get Product name | Shop | Shop | Shop.
A worked example you can copy
Example product (labelled example). Name in Shopify: Harbour Linen Overshirt. Variant: Sage, M. Handle: harbour-linen-overshirt.
| Field | Write this | Why | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product title | Harbour Linen Overshirt — Sage | Shoppers on the PDP | |
| Meta title | Sage Linen Overshirt, Relaxed Fit \ | Harbour | Query + fact + brand |
| Meta description | Relaxed-fit sage linen overshirt in OEKO-TEX linen, chest pocket, corozo buttons. Cut for warm weather. EU stock. | Facts Google can quote | |
| On-page description | Specs, fabric weight, fit notes, what’s in the box | Shoppers and models |
For the Sand colourway, change Sage / sage only. Do not reuse the Sage title. For a 2-pack, put 2-Pack in the title; pack size is the differentiator.
If you generate with AI, paste the output next to the spec sheet. Delete anything you cannot point to on the page (a GSM you never measured, a “bestseller” you never ranked, a country of origin you do not ship from).
Common mistakes
Same title on every variant URL. Shopify can index variant URLs. If they share one title, you taught Google they are the same page.
Keyword stuffing. Linen Shirt Linen Overshirt Best Linen Shirt Buy Linen gets rewritten. Shoppers skip it.
Brand-first on an unknown brand. Harbour | Overshirt wastes the start of the snippet.
Description is a coupon. 15% off this weekend dies on Monday. The crawl stays.
Empty collection fields. Collection pages are how people search “linen shirts”. Fill them.
Translated store, English tags. Each Shopify Market needs its own title and description. Rankly Starter covers multi-language SEO for Markets, in 16 languages.
Fixing titles and ignoring the page. A perfect title on a noindexed product still does not show. Run the SEO check on the live URL after you save.
Meta titles and descriptions are the listing. Product copy, alt text, FAQ schema, redirects and llms.txt are the rest of the same job — getting Google and ChatGPT something true to read. Start with the two fields in the snippet. They are the part shoppers see before they ever hit the store.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Shopify meta title?
The title tag search engines read for that URL. In Shopify it lives in the Search engine listing preview on the product, collection, page or blog. It is not the same field as the on-page product title.
How long should a Shopify meta title be?
Write for about 50–60 characters so Google can show the whole line on mobile. Longer titles get cut. Shorter titles waste the snippet. Count characters, not words.
How long should a Shopify meta description be?
About 140–155 characters. Google may rewrite it from on-page copy. A clear unique description still helps when the rewrite is worse than what you wrote.
Does Shopify fill meta titles automatically?
If you leave the SEO fields empty, Shopify often falls back to the product title and a truncated description. That is why twenty variants can share one weak snippet.
Should every product have a unique meta title?
Yes. Two URLs with the same title compete with each other. Add the differentiating fact (colour, size system, scent, pack size) so the snippet is about that page.
Can AI write Shopify meta titles and descriptions?
Yes, if you preview the snippet and you check the facts. An AI draft that invents a material or a size is worse than a short honest title. Rankly generates titles and descriptions with a Google preview before you save, in 16 languages, inside a credit cap on each plan.
