SEO & AI on Shopify

How Shopify stores get found by Google and cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews — schema, robots.txt, llms.txt and indexability.

AI assistants and Google both read the same things on a Shopify store: structured data, an open robots.txt, indexable pages and, increasingly, an llms.txt file. If those are wrong, no amount of product copy gets you cited. These guides cover Shopify schema, AI crawler rules, canonical URLs and how to check a live page with the free ChatGPT SEO check for Shopify stores.

SEO & AI: common questions

How do I get my Shopify store to show up in ChatGPT?

Make sure pages are indexable, robots.txt does not block GPTBot or OAI-SearchBot, product pages carry complete Product and Offer JSON-LD, and key pages are listed in an llms.txt file. Then ask ChatGPT about your brand and products to see what it returns.

Does Shopify add structured data automatically?

Most themes output basic Product JSON-LD, but coverage varies and SEO apps sometimes duplicate or override it. Check a live product page with Google's Rich Results Test and fix missing price, availability or image fields.

Is llms.txt necessary for a Shopify store?

It is optional but cheap. A short file at yourstore.com/llms.txt pointing to your best collections, policies and flagship products helps AI systems understand which pages represent your brand. Fix indexability and schema first.
